Sergey Kovalev promoter Kathy Duva lists Anthony Yarde as potential opponent after regaining world title

Written by

British light-heavyweight contender Anthony Yarde is starting to make waves on the world scene.

Despite admittedly not having yet faced top class opposition, the Londoner is ranked #1 at light heavyweight by the WBO and so is on the verge of becoming mandatory challenger for their title.

Sergey Kovalev previously unified the titles, but now holds the WBO belt alone

This has not gone unnoticed by the WBO’s current light-heavyweight champion, Sergey Kovalev.

The imperious Russian regained his belt from Eleider Alvarez in a rematch on February 2 and is now targeting unification matches against the likes of WBC champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk and IBF king Artur Beterbiev.

However, when asked about his next move, promoter Kathy Duva explained that Yarde could also feature in their plans.

Anthony Yarde has collected WBO trinket belts and climbed the rankings

“Obviously Kovalev is going to be fighting on ESPN,” Duva told Boxing Talk, “And so is Oleksandr Gvozdyk and so is Artur Beterbiev.

“Arum has been talking about [WBO super-middleweight champion] Gilberto Ramirez and that would be interesting.

“There’s also an Anthony Yarde mandatory coming up soon, so we’ve got a lot of options which is great.

“It’s a terrific division and there’s so many fighters and so many opportunities that it’s going to be fun to decide.”
