Marcus Rashford: Gary Lineker lauds Manchester United and England striker as a ‘fantastic talent’

Written by

Gary Lineker has hailed Marcus Rashford as a “fabulous young talent” – admitting he’s never understood criticism of the England striker’s finishing.

Rashford, 21, has been in inspired form under interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following Jose Mourinho’s sacking in December.

Gary Lineker spoke exclusively to talkSPORT on a range of topics

The England forward has scored six goals in 10 games during that time and was named the Premier League Player of the Month award for January.

United have been on a stunning run of form too, most recently running out 3-0 winners at struggling Fulham, winning all but one of their last 11 games.

And speaking exclusively to talkSPORT, BT Sport presenter Lineker stressed just how critical the United academy product is to the club’s long-term plans.

He said: “The great, young players are always the key. Marcus is a fabulous young talent.

“I love the way he plays. I have never understood this whole nonsense that he doesn’t look calm in front of goal.

“I always felt he was the polar opposite of that.

“People see him missing a couple of chances and then suddenly he’s not a natural finisher.

“I don’t know where they got that from, because I love the way he finishes.”

Lineker believes it’s the complete confidence that Rashford has in himself that has been the biggest factor in his rapid development.

He added: “He’ll obviously learn and get better along the way, but he’s got some superb characteristics to his game.

“He’s got great speed, great confidence, a great touch and he’s very humble.

“When was an 18-year-old he was picking up the ball and taking corners and free-kick without hesitation.

“To me that shows a player who is hugely confident in his own ability, not one who chokes in front of goal.”
